Oct. 11–Oct. 15, 2023

As a continuation of our ongoing collaboration, Gordon Robichaux and Parker Gallery will present works by gallery artists installed in dialogue.

Leilah Babirye and Gerald Jackson deconstruct their pasts as a form of liberation. Jackson’s paintings feature symbols that engage historical epochs and ancient cultures to reclaim identity. In her ceramic works, Babirye creates a dignified queer and trans community that builds on the traditions of her native Ugandan culture.

A celebrated drag queen, Tabboo!’s diaristic paintings evidence his deft use of staining and inventive color to convey his vision of NYC. Funk artist Maija Peeples-Bright depicts fantastical animal scenes in maximal arrangements, infusing gaiety and a sense of the absurd into her alternate realities.

Siobhan Liddell and Franklin Williams make deeply personal work—rich with material and conceptual experimentation. Williams’ obsessively constructed paintings include stitched and sewn elements, guided by an introspective process approaching meditation. Liddell uses thread, wire, and screws to attach ceramic and found objects to her oil paintings. The disjunctive elements create surrealist juxtapositions evoking memories and dreams. An inventive painter, Marley Freeman builds her compositions layer by layer, applying hand-mixed pigments in vibrant color, influenced by the warp and weft of textiles.
